Happy May!

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We are starting our final stretch for this year. May is starting this week and the end of the year is just around the corner. Only a month more of school and these kiddos are 2nd graders! It is hard to believe. This year has flown by too fast!

This Tuesday is our testing day in the library. Please make sure that your kids are present this day at school. Kids who come to school well rested and with a full belly of healthy food do better on tests than kids who don't. Please do your best to make sure your child is ready for the testing so we can see their growth since the beginning of the year.

Speaking of testing.....we have been working hard on our math facts the last couple of weeks and have seen some major improvement in the children's MCOMP scores. They are getting faster and more accurate in their addition and subtraction facts. Way to go kids!

Great job selling the cookie dough!!! We had many kids from our class sell so many buckets of cookie dough to earn money for Willow Canyon. Way to go guys! On Friday we had an assembly where the top sellers were recognized for their sales. Some kids even got to go inside a money machine and grab as much money as they could! Way to go wildcats!

In math we have been learning about graphing. It has been fun to see the kids understanding and reading graphs and seeing how they can help them find information. The first grade common core for math teaches the kids about picture graphs, bar graphs, and using tally marks. The kids have been doing so well with all of these methods of collecting data.

Here is to another great week!

Homemade Gak!

Dear Parents,

This week we had a little fun and made some homemade gak! The kids were in complete heaven! They had so much fun with it and thought it was amazing to make and see the steps of how it comes together. We had two amazing moms come in to help who did an amazing job. We couldn't have done it without them! It was fun for the kids to take a little break from all the hard work they have been doing and just be kids for an hour. They loved playing with it and creating different things. They were even able to write their name on their desk with it! Here are some pictures from the day!

This week, we also got to listen to our 6th graders perform their broadway musical concert. They did a great job! We had a ton of students who had siblings performing in the concert. They loved watching them and hearing all the music and seeing all the dancing! So fun!
For all of you who sold cookie dough for our big school fundraiser, the cookie dough will be available for pick up tomorrow, Monday the 22nd. You can pick it up in the gym. Congratulations to all of you big sellers and for helping Willow Canyon earn an IPAD lab!!!

This Thursday we will be listening to our Spring Choir perform their concert! They have been practicing hard before school for the last month. It will be fun to hear them share their talents.

Thank you to all of you parents who are so diligent with your children in doing and completing their homework each week. I can really see the difference that it is making to have that extra review at home in what we are learning in class. Keep up the good work!

We finished our chapter book on Friday that we having been reading aloud each day for the past month. We have been reading Roald Dahl books. The kids love them! First we read, James and the Giant Peach, and then we just finished, The BFG, (The Big Friendly Giant). It is so fun to read these books with the kids and to see their imaginations fly!  It is fun to see them learning to love reading and finding enjoyment and entertainment in the stories. It is amazing to me how much of the story they retain and how much they remember even after a long weekend of no reading. They are getting so good at visualizing the characters in their minds and following along with the plot. I would encourage you to continue doing this at home with your child especially over the summer months. Pick out a fun chapter book to read with your child and read it out loud to them together. Focus on reading comprehension and making sure that they understand what is happening. It will be a great bonding moment between you and your child as well as great for their reading and education! Plus, it is so much fun!

I hope everyone has a great week!!!

Weekly News!

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! I am excited for a new week!

To wash away the snow that fell today and welcome in spring, we made some fun rainbows using fruit loops cereal and marshmallows. We have been learning some songs about spring and singing them in hopes that spring will soon be here to stay. :) Here are some pictures of our rainbows that we made.

And.....with the wintery weather that we have been having, please make sure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately. We have been having many kids coming to school with only a sweatshirt and they are FREEZING outside. Please make sure they come dressed in a warm coat.

Please focus on math facts with week. For the whole month of April, we are putting a big push on addition and subtraction facts up to 20. The kids are working on them at school and we are having practice timed tests to get them ready for the MCOMP. Please work on them as much as possible at home. There are two sheets of facts in their homework folders this week. Please help them memorize them and find fast ways to figure them out. Focus on doubles facts, doubles plus 1 and doubles plus 2 strategies. Those are all strategies that we have been talking about in class. The last MCOMP test for this year will be held on April 30th. We want all of the kids to do their best this day and meet the benchmark. I hope we can all work hard to make this happen! :)

The kids have been doing so well in class. Reading Street is a hard program with tons of things for them to learn. I have been so impressed at how well they have adapted to it. They have come such a long way since the beginning of the year! Crazy to think that they are almost 2nd graders. They have matured in their writing, reading, spelling, and math as well as socially. It has been so fun to see.

Have a great week!

Weekly News

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! There isn't much to update on for this week. Just a couple quick things:

1. Our last district wide testing is taking place on April 30th. This is the final testing day to see the students' growth and improvement since the beginning of the year. Please make sure that they are at school that day. Also, it is important that they come ready to do their best with a good breakfast in the morning. I hope to see even more improvements since January in all areas. Keep on reading at home with your child aiming for 20 minutes a night. I know that the more they are reading at home, the better they will do on this final reading test.

2. Also on April 30th, we are having our MCOMP test which is a speed addition and subtraction math fact test. We have been practicing this test every Tuesday to get the kids more familiar with the whole process. It would be a great idea to have your children practice their math facts at home so they can say them in a quick amount of time. The more they can get through correctly, the better score they will get. Make some flash cards at home or print them off online to drill them at home. You can also buy flashcard sets at Lakeshore Learning, Walmart, or sometimes even the Dollar Tree. The more practice the better!

Have a great week everyone!
