Snow Week!

Dear Parents,

What a crazy week this has been! Snow day after snow day.....turned into a snow week! I couldn't believe that we had a whole week off of school. I grew up in Idaho and taught school in Utah, and we were lucky to have one snow day a year if any. Even if we got 3 feet of snow, which was usual, we still had school. They just never cancelled. Some days were treacherous getting to school safely. I am really enjoying teaching here in Virginia where they are more mindful about the safety of the students and teachers when it comes to the weather. It was nice to have a second winter break! I hope everyone enjoyed the snow and stayed warm and safe on the roads!

Just a few things.....

-No show n' tell this week. We will continue show n' tell the following week!

-We are in need of the following items for the classroom- googly eyes (large and small) for art projects  , dry erase erasers (small ones), and kid appropriate magazines of all sorts for the kids to cut out pictures.

-Because of the snow week, our star of the week schedule has changed. Every child will now be pushed back a week later than their original week on the current schedule. The most recent schedule was sent a couple weeks ago as an attachment in an email. Please make note of when your child's new week is and be ready to bring in their poster on the Monday of their week to present to the class. Thanks!

-The vocabulary parade is still scheduled on its original day, January 29th, this Wednesday. It is going to be awesome! The AM kids will go from 9:45-10:15 and the PM kids will go from 11:45-12:15. Parents are welcome to come and watch. Please have your child wear or bring (whatever is appropriate) their costume to school that day. I will take lots of pictures and post them on the blog for those of you who won't be able to attend. We hope to see you there!

-We now have school on Monday the 27th. The teacher work day was moved to January 24th. Hopefully next week will be a full week of school!
I am looking for some mom helpers to volunteer or centers this Monday the 27th. It wasn't on the original center schedule because of the change with the county calendar. If you are able to come in that day to help out with centers, send me an email. Thanks! We need you! :)
-Chinese New Year is this coming Friday, the 31st! We have two awesome mom volunteers who are coming in to teach the kids about this special celebration. We are so lucky to have them! I know the kids are going to learn a ton as well as have a blast! Thank you volunteers!

-Our Valentine's class party is coming up on Friday, February 14th. Please stay tuned for sign ups from the room moms to bring in items for the party and for extra parent volunteers! Thanks! Also, on Valentine's day, the students are welcome to bring in valentines to hand out to their classmates. Of course it is optional. We will be making containers to hold all the valentines. Please bring a valentine for everyone in the class. If you bring in valentines for not everyone in the class, you will not be allowed to hand them out. We don't want to have any hurt feelings. Please no candy. However, you may bring in notes, cards, pencils, stickers, or any other fun small toy that you wish. Thank you! :)

Have a great weekend! I'll see everyone on Monday!

Winter is Here!

Dear Parents,

Hello everyone! Thanks for reading and keeping up to date with the class blog. Enjoy!

Our star of the week in the AM class was Emily. She only has one more week as a Pinebrook Puma and then she is moving to a different school. We were glad that she got to be the star before she left! We learned that Emily has two sisters and 1 brother and that she loves to go on boat rides and go to the beach. Way to go Emily! We will miss you. :(

Haley was our star of the week for the PM class. We learned that Haley has two sisters and that she use to live in Amsterdam! She has traveled all around Europe and has seen lots of cool things. She even got to go to Austria and visit the Sound of Music house!

Happy Martin Luther King Day!
On Friday, we talked a little about Martin Luther King Jr. I wanted the kids to understand a little about him and his great example as a brave leader.
When the kids came in I had this sign posted on the bathroom door:
They didn't notice it at first...not until later at the carpet.
I did a small object lesson with them using two eggs, one brown and one white.
I asked them which egg would they rather eat and why? Some of the kids preferred the brown egg and some of the kids preferred the white egg. It was interesting to hear what they thought about each egg and their opinions of why they thought one egg was better than the other. I then cracked both eggs while the students' closed their eyes and then showed them to the two eggs. They were amazed to see that the eggs were completely identical on the inside. I asked them which one they preferred now and they said, "both."
I told the kids that only blue eyed kids could use the bathroom today. Some got mad at me while others got sad. Some started laughing. Some couldn't believe it and were in shock. I asked them how they felt not being able to use the bathroom just because of their eye color. I wanted them to internalize it and understand that everyone is the same on the inside no matter what color skin or eyes we have on the outside.

Weekly News

1. The vocabulary parade is coming up January 29th! I have received some emails from some of you who are confused about this whole thing. Don't stress about it. It can be a simple thing. All of the words assigned to our class are math related. The kids are to come to school with a costume (wearing it or in their backpack depending on the costume) to wear in the school vocabulary parade. The costume can be simple. Be creative and think of a way to display that certain word. Anything will work really. The school has seen it all! It is a great way for the kids to learn vocabulary words in a fun and creative way! Have fun with it. Can't wait to see all the costumes. And yes, parents are invited to come and watch on that day. See you then! :)

2. Show n' Tell this week- Saying goodbye to last year. Bring something that reminds you of 2013.

3. We have been learning about time this week in class. We learned time to the hour and will be learning about time to the half hour next week. Ask them to tell you the difference between digital and analog clocks. I'm sure they would love to tell you about it! :)

4. On January 31st, we have a couple wonderful mom volunteers coming into our class to teach us about Chinese New Year! I know the kids will be excited to learn about that special holiday celebrated by others around the world. If you have any talents or skills that you think would be interesting for the kids to learn about that you would like to share with the class, let me know! We would love to have you come in and share!

5. Do you have old magazines laying around your house that are ready to be thrown out? Please bring them on in! We will be doing a project using magazine clippings in the next couple weeks. Please send in your old (kid appropriate) magazines in your child's backpack for us to use. It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

6. Please sign up to volunteer in centers! We really need your help, especially with the afternoon class. There are still more slots available. Check it out and see if you can come in to help! A HUGE  thank you to all of the parents who have already volunteered for centers. Thank you! You are so great! Here is the link:

Have a great long weekend everyone! See you Tuesday!

Happy January!

 Dear Parents,

Last week was crazy and short with all of the snow days. Even though I was grateful for the added time off, I am excited for this week to hopefully have a full 5 day week of school! It seems like forever and I am excited to get back in the groove of normal school hours.

Our stars of the week this week were Suhani and Landon. Suhani is in our AM class and she made a beautiful poster. We learned that her favorite color is pink, she had a preschool graduation, and she went to Niagra Falls with her family. Way to go Suhani!
Landon was our star for the PM class. We learned that he went to Disney World on his birthday, that he likes to build pyramids with his cousins, and that he loves his family especially his two older brothers. You rock Landon!
This week, we celebrated the new year, by making new year's resolutions. The kids thought of something that they want to do better this year or something that they want to learn. They came up with some funny ideas! They made a person to look like them wearing a party hat to celebrate!

Weekly News

1. Show n' Tell for this week- Bring your favorite present in that you received over the holidays. Tell us who gave it to you and what you like about it.

2. January 24th is Family Fitness Night hosted by the PTA. It is a great opportunity for families to come and spend time together while supporting Pinebrook and getting some exercise. Mark it on your calendar!

3. No school January 20th or January 27th. Happy 3 day weekend two weeks in a row!

4. Who is excited for the Vocabulary Parade!!!?? I hope everyone got their words and are thinking about what they would like to wear to demonstrate their word. Both of my two classes got math related words. It will be so fun to see what you come up with! The big day is on January 29th. Can't wait to see it!

5. Because of the snow days, the sight words were not glued into the homework books last week. Sorry about the confusion. This Monday, the homework book will have two sets of sight words glued in. They have the date at the top so you know which set is for this week. Please work on the sight words at home and try to get them memorized!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!!!

Welcome Back!

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school! We have had a long winter break and some snow days to top it off, but now January is here and school is starting again for the new year. I am excited and anxious to get back to work and to see everyone again!

This post is short but there are just a few things that I wanted to mention....

-Show n' tell this Friday- Free Choice. We have had so many Fridays cancelled recently and I know the PM class especially is itching to share their free choice show n' tell. Hopefully this Friday will be the one where they can do that!

-Vocabulary Parade!!! Information for the upcoming vocabulary school parade will be in the Thursday folders this week. Stay tuned.

-No school January 20th and January 27th because of Martin Luther King Day and teacher work day.

See you tomorrow!
