Goodbye April....Hello May!

Dear Parents,

We had another great week this week! Here are some of the fun things that we did....

Our star for the AM class was Brayden Z. Brayden made a fabulous poster! We saw some pictures of him with his family and when he went to Lego Land. Brayden loves all types of sports and he loves celebrating the holidays. Great job Brayden!
We talked a little about Earth Day and ways that we can take care of the Earth. After our discussion we had recess. I noticed that some of the kids were drawing pictures of the earth with sidewalk chalk out on the playground during recess! They were writing things like, "I love the Earth!" It was so fun to see them display their excitement about protecting the Earth during their free time.
We have really been enjoying Writer's Workshop recently in class. It is amazing to see the kids stretch out words and come up with ideas and stories from their lives to write about. They are all turning into such creative and wonderful writers! On Friday we had our "publishing party" where the kids celebrated one of their stories that they have been working on the past few weeks. They created a front cover and a back cover for their story. They even made up a title for it. It was so fun to hear their stories and to see them proudly read it in front of the class.

 Marshmallow Challenge STEAM Project!
To get the kids excited for the STEAM Expo that is coming up on May 3rd, we did a STEAM project in our class on Friday. We did the Marshmallow Challenge. The kids were put into groups and then told to build a tower with the given supplies, that could hold the weight of a regular sized marshmallow without collapsing. They were given 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of yarn, 20 sticks of raw spaghetti, and 1 marshmallow. It was fun to see them working together and coming up with ideas to make their tower stand!

Kindergarten News

1. Don't miss the STEAM Expo that is coming up on May 3rd! It is going to be a blast! The kids will be working with catapults, designing different paper airplanes, going to a big dome to watch science movies, building stuff with blocks, programming robots, turning themselves into a control pad, and many other super cool things! You don't want to miss it. The STEAM team has been putting a lot of time and work into making this a huge success. I will see you there!

2. Show n' Tell this week will be: Jokes! Write down or memorize 1 or 2 funny jokes to tell the class. Be ready to share them out loud to us.

3. The Henry Cole Author visit will be this Thursday, May 1st. The AM class will be able to see him during class. Both classes and parents are invited to a family night that evening.

Let's have a great week!

Happy Spring Break!

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is enjoying their spring break!

Our star of the week in our AM class was Natalie. She made a fabulous poster! We learned that Natalie is half Korean and half Chinese and that she loves to go swimming. She got to go to Disney World and take a picture with Sleeping Beauty. Good job Natalie!

Sahasra was our star of the week in our PM class. We saw pictures of Sahasra from all of her birthday parties and we learned that she loves pizza. She likes to do Indian dancing and hang out with her family. Great job Sahasra!

This week, we got to go see the chicks down in the 5th grade hall! A ton of baby chicks hatched this week at Pinebrook, and our kindergarten class got the chance to hold them and pet them. They all loved it and wanted to take them home for a pet!

This week we have been learning about water. We talked about how water can be a solid, liquid and a gas. On Friday, we did a science experiment where we worked in teams to turn ice cubes, a solid, into a liquid. The kids had to use the heat from their hands to melt the ice cube. We then poured all the liquid into a cup. When we get back from break we will see if the liquid turned into a gas!

Kindergarten News

1. We are in need of stickers for our classroom to use for an art/creativity center. They can be any kind and any size. We are also doing a couple different STEAM projects during the month of May and are in need of popsicle sticks, cardboard squares, string, and regular size marshmallows. If you are able to donate some of these items to our classroom that would be fantastic! Thanks!

2. Mark your calendars for STEAM Day on Saturday, May 3rd in the gym at Pinebrook. It will be a great day for families to come out and get to see what STEAM is all about as well as try out some experiments themselves. I will see you there.

3. Our kindergarten BUGZ Show will be on Thursday, May 22nd! Our class bug is the ladybug.

4.  I hope everyone is having a fun spring break and is enjoying the extra time with their little ones. If possible, squeeze in some Raz Kids and IXL time to keep them learning and working during the break. Safe travels and I will see everyone soon!

5. No show n' tell this week!

Wacky Hair Day!

Dear Parents,

Our two beautiful stars of the week this week were Kashvi and Amy. Kashvi made a great poster! We got to see all the fun places that she has traveled to including the Bahamas and India. She even got to go to Disney World and take a picture with Cinderella. She has an older sister that goes to Pinebrook. Great job Kashvi!

Amy made a great poster. Amy loves princesses and her favorite princess is Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Amy loves bananas and strawberries and her favorite color is red. Amy has been learning English this year and she has made remarkable progress. Great job Amy!
This week we learned about the weather. We talked about what different kinds of clothing you might wear during different seasons and weather. We had the kids dress up and the class guessed what season they were dressed up for. They loved it!
Friday was, "Wacky Hair Day!" The kids came to school with some pretty crazy hairstyles!

Kindergarten News

1. Spring break is April 14th through April 18th. Enjoy your break!

2. The Kindergarten Bugz Show had been postponed to May 22nd. Mark your calendars and come and see what your child has learned about bugs!

3. Field day is June 12th. It is going to be a blast!

4. Please encourage your child to do Raz Kids at home. We did Raz Kids this week at the computer lab and I noticed that some kids haven't been logged on in months. Also, some kids were on a level that was super easy for them and some kids were at a level that was way too difficult for them and they couldn't even read the books. If you think your child is on the wrong level, please let me know and I can switch it. Remember to have them do the three steps- ear for listening to the book, eye for reading the book, and the question mark for the quiz. If they do poorly on the quiz then have them read the story again. Have them retell the story to you and talk about the characters to prepare for the DRA testing that is coming up in May. It could be a good idea to have them read each story multiple times as well to develop reading fluency. It can be a very powerful program when used correctly. Let me know if you have any questions.

5. Please remember to return the Thursday folders every Friday to class. Please sign them saying that you saw the information that was sent home.

6. Report cards go home this Wednesday the 9th.

7. This Friday is pajama day! Wear your pajamas to school!

8. No show n' tell this week. Thanks!

Have a great week!
